The Get Down, that aired on Netflix last Friday, bills itself as the story of the birth of Hip Hop in the Bronx late 1970’s. There has been a lot of talk about the show across the internet and Netflix has released the first 6 episodes of the season all at once.
It’s a change for director Baz Luhrmann to take on such a project. But one thing they have got right is the soundtrack and the stunning visuals of 70’s New York. They have also depicted characters such as Grand Master Flash in such a great way it makes you realise the art behind scratching records. There’s also scenes fairly reminiscent of ‘The Warriors’ when we first come across the Warlords, one of the many gangs trying to take control of the Bronx.
All in all the Get Down has been a great watch so far with still the second half to go. It’s not like many other musical dramas, but it does give a greater understanding to the birth of hip hop and its origin.
Check it out on Netflix now.
